Latest home staging statistics on the value of professionally staging a home to sell and preparing a house to sell.
I'm so excited about our latest, 2018 home staging statistics survey results! In the survey, we studied the results of over 4,200 staged homes which makes this the largest study of staged homes ever! The results came strictly from HSR Certified Professional Home Stagers from across the world but mostly in the U.S.
The 2018 home staging statistics reflect the current, hot real estate market and the amount of money seller's are seeing from investing in the staging of their home vs the seller who does not invest in staging within their market.
There has never been a better time to become a home stager because HSR stagers are killing it right now for their clients!
Even I was surprised at these results but in this hot market with the varying price differentials we are seeing from neighborhood to neighborhood, a home that is "dialed-in" for it's potential buyers is seeing HUGE results.
When sellers spent just .5% of the sales price MORE on the staging services, they saw at least a 6% price difference!
In other words, when stagers charged less or stopped short due to the seller's tight budget, the results were not as good. Those extra, cosmetic updates like paint, new light fixtures or flooring made a HUGE difference in the sales price outcome.
I went ahead and created some gorgeous 2018 home staging statistic imagery and typography for our home staging certification HSR Members in the members training area to download and drip in their social feeds over the next year. I'm also going to add video like the one below for HSR members too.

The "actual value" of home staging is hard to quantify because who has the crystal ball to know what the home would have gone for had it not been staged? Having said that, I get emails daily from HSR Grads who stage homes that have been sitting only to have them receive multiple offers after they staged the home. 2017 home staging statistics are hard to come by but luckily a new survey has been done.
In 2015 the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) created a survey profile of home staging for the first time and the staging industry went wild! Finally, staging which has become commonplace on HGTV was being acknowledged in a real way by NAR. I'm so pleased to see that NAR has updated those statistics for 2017 and while not much has changed, here are some key differences in the report:
Yep, agents are "getting it" and the "Seller's Agents" are really seeing that the homes that are staged are getting a better price than the un-staged homes. While it's hard to quantify exactly how much more a seller is getting for their home, it's easy to say that improving upon a product usually nets you more.
The Buyer's Agent sees that taking their client's to homes that have been staged provides a more likely offer since the staging does effect the way the buyer views the home.
How important is staging every room of the home? It turns out that each room has it's own value of importance according to these 2017 home staging statistics. In fact, this is one reason why I train my students to do good, better, best type bids when it comes to staging a vacant home. Providing options to clients in a way that fits their budget while maximizing return on investment is important and my HSR home staging certification training teaches this critical business concept.
Each room in the home provides an opportunity to "wow" the buyer, so staging and every detail matter!
Staging the key areas in a vacant home which include the living areas, master bedroom, dining areas and kitchen are obviously an important factor to most buyers according to these 2017 home staging statistics!
I've long been saying that outdoor areas are trending in importance to the aesthetic and return on investment, so it was nice to see that this area of staging was right behind the kitchen in importance!
A lot of times the agent feels like they should be the ones providing the staging service or paying for staging but this is simply not true. The home seller benefits the most by having their home "move-in ready" and staged, so they should be the ones to pay for this critical service.
In fact, now more than ever home seller's are contacting a professional home stager BEFORE getting an agent...
2017 National Association of Realtors® Profile of Home Staging Report is in! Here are some 2017 home staging statistics images you can use…
Finally, the National Association of Realtors has surveyed real estate agents on the merits of home staging! To see the full report, click here or on the image below. In the survey, they interviewed over 2,300 real estate agents to get their opinion on the benefits of staging, who pays for the staging and how often they recommend staging to their clients.
As a home staging trainer whose sole mission has been to “make home staging an industry standard” for the last 10 years, I’m happy to say that a whopping 34% of the agents surveyed insist on ALL their homes being staged! Yippee! Before I get too excited, we stagers have a long way to go in educating the other 66% who don’t think that every listing benefits from staging, so here you go…
I’ve included some fantastic quote images below from the staging report, I want everyone to share on Facebook, Pinterest, your websites, etc…all year long. They are yours to use freely to get the word out!

I just got back from Las Vegas and the RESA Convention and my ears are buzzing with all the excitement and enthusiasm from home stagers across the globe. I’ve been doing staging training for almost 10 years now and I can truly say there has never been a better time to start a home staging career than now! Here are my 7 quick reasons why this is the best time to start a home staging career but I’ll have more to report on the RESA Convention in coming blogs:
Yep, the general consensus from the over 350 professional stagers at the RESA Convention is that they are BUSY. Their phones are ringing and they are staging and doing redesign like crazy. This isn’t too surprising because of the next handful of reasons but to say that 2014 was a good year for starting a home staging career, as well as staging statistically is an understatement.
When you look at the RESA Industry Awards and the amazing work these stagers do every day, you will truly become a believer in the benefits of staging. Michelle Minch, a Los Angeles Stager and 2006 Home Staging Resource Graduate, was the overall winner in 2015 for her gorgeous vacant work which is sampled below:
When stagers do amazing work, real estate agents, home sellers, home builders and everyone else take notice. The listing photographs stand out and these homes get the best price!
When I started the Home Staging Resource almost 10 years ago I knew that I needed to add Redesign training as well…great staging turns into move-in redesign. I was the only staging trainer at the time (and even currently I believe) who incorporates both certification in staging and redesign into the training business model which is essential. According to a recent Houzz Survey of 6,500 home professionals over 90% expect their business to grow!
Those of you familiar with my blog know that we polled over 350 home stagers and 3500 homes sold worldwide and asked them (and their agents) two critical questions: Are professionally staged homes selling for more than not professionally staged homes? At what percentage increase on average are they selling higher? While the responses varied, on average the homes that were professionally staged in 2014 sold for 10% more than the homes that were not professionally staged.
The training for staging and redesign has never been better! In fact, did you know that almost every one of the staging award finalists in the US categories (and some in the Canadian) are part of my Staging Mentors program? We now have so many wonderful, generous mentors I don’t even list them all on the site. The Staging Mentors program which is the third package in the HSR Certification training won for most Innovative Product or Service of the Year in 2015 at the RESA Conference!
Here’s a picture of me hugging my award at the Conference…
Not only has my training improved over the years, but I know that others have as well because we keep each other sharp and motivated. Most of all, we love to see our students succeed! I love what beautiful Kristi Barnett is doing in her psychological staging and tricky space trainings! Here’s a photo of us on the red carpet:
Okay, here’s where I may be a bit biased but I have to say that home stagers as a whole, are a very fun, hard working, innovative, kind group of people with hearts of gold! There is an enormous amount of respect we give to each other and our clients. Stagers are fueled by their passion in design and their perfectionist personalities. Here’s a photo from the RESA Conference of some of the HSR Grads over the last 10 years who I’ve had the honor and privilege to be a part of their training. As you can see, we are still having fun up on stage chit chatting…
Here’s another of some of the gals who missed the photo up on stage:
And another fun photo of our yearly HSR networking event where I buy drinks for all my grads prior to the conference. Even the bartender commented on what a nice, fun and cool group of people we are:
I would be a fool if I didn’t acknowledge that the rise and popularity of HGTV and websites like Houzz give people motivation to put beauty into their homes and buyers a “vision” of what they want to see in their next home. The professional home stager is the person who makes that vision a reality!

Not all professional stagers are equal! Our HSR Certification training was the first and one of the only staging and redesign training programs that has been third-party, accredited by the Real Estate Staging Association, so invest in the best!
We just completed the largest home staging statistics survey ever taken of over 3500 homes sold in 2014. The home staging statistics show that on average, professional home staging by an HSR Certified Home Stager increases the value of the home over 10% of unstaged comparables! Spending around 1% on the “professional” staging of a home resulted in HUGE returns for the 2014 home seller. In fact, we saw direct correlation between staging dollars spent and increase in sales price.
It’s not just about “speed of sale” in today’s housing market but about making the most money out of your most valuable commodity. While staged homes are selling quicker according to the RESA stats, I wanted to survey whether they were selling for more than the unstaged, neighbor’s home and boy did we get great results! I’ll be sharing more about these results in the coming weeks. Here is a quote that is good to keep in mind and pass along for the next selling season if things continue on their current trajectory:
Interestingly, our International HSR grads posted fantastic gains upwards of 15% which was not surprising since they are pioneering staging in their markets. The midwest housing market had a bit less in return than the rest of the country which was also indicative of those markets being a bit behind the California, Texas, New York rates.
Overall these numbers don’t come as a big surprise since the popularity of HGTV and sites like Houzz, create an expectation for buyers when they are searching for the right home…they want the model home look and professional staging is the best way to achieve that.
